UnConference May 2019 - 10 Years, Baby!!

Our 10th UnConference!

Invitation poster for May 2019 UnConference

What happens if a group of witty people, all of whom are passionate about university biology education, get together for a few days in a lovely natural setting with no predetermined agenda? oCUBE is delighted to invite you to the TENTH annual (Un)Conference to discuss pedagogical matters in a small group setting in beautiful Muskoka. The (Un)Conference is designed to support a community of practice among people dedicated to an exceptionally satisfying experience of undergraduate biology education. Faculty, staff, graduate students, and administrators interested in biology education are all welcome. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis (maximum of 35 participants).

Our (Un)Conference will be held Tuesday May 21 to Friday May 24, at Shamrock Lodge. This is our 10th oCUBE-iversary! We're Tin For Ten!

The 2019 (Un)Conference program is posted above! The spreadsheet has links that lead to the scribe notes from each session. This year was our TENTH (Un)Conference and we welcomed some old faces and some new people who we hope will make coming to the UnConference an annual event. Although the weather didn't cooperate, we had a good time (and got to see the Raptors advance!), and had our first AGM as oCUBE Incorporated.

As mentioned so many times, the UnConference is a community effort. While Facilitators help moderate discussions, and Timers keep us aligned with the universe, Scribes diligently take notes for the group (and allow oCUBErs who couldn't attend the chance to catch up. Once again, we used Scribe forms (a Google form), so notes were collected in real-time and posted somewhat(ish) immediately (depends on your perception of the space-time continuum) to the website. Where session notes are available, there are clickable links in the program spreadsheet below.

As with other years, we had a few different types of sessions:

  • BIGS (Big Idea Group Sessions; ~ 55 min) and

  • GIFTS (Great Ideas For Teaching Sessions; ~ 25 min)

  • the now regular Fix My Sh%#*!

  • and our first official AGM as an incorporated entity.

To alleviate some of the stress of making a schedule on the fly after votination, we had two pre-planned anchor sessions (pitched one month before the UnConference), and we tried out pitching and votination on late Tuesday afternoon.

We hope that everyone got something from the UnConference and would love to hear what you plan to do with what you learned! Drop us a line at ocubeorg@gmail.com
