    Official oCUBE Membership: Open now!

As announced in our December UnConference, we have been working hard these last several months to establish an official, integrated membership system for oCUBE—bringing together our website, membership management software, online payment processing, and communications. For the first time, you can now officially register as an oCUBE member on our new website!

Who can register as an official member?

    • Everyone is welcome (we're not the "open" consortium for nothing)!

    Why become an official member?

    • Support a vibrant organization and professional development for any career stage!
    • Help to enhance our continued growth and offerings!

    What can a member do?

    • Vote and run for executive/standing committee positions to have a say in the future of oCUBE! (Next round of elections coming in May!)
    • *Lots of developments are still under way (e.g., members area/searchable member profiles/online store for oCUBE swag?!)
    • **Note that all our oCUBE events and newsletter are still open to anyone, regardless of membership status

Where & how do I register?

    • You can register directly on our new membership sign-up page!
    • There are four types of paid membership available, depending on your current position title—all of which are full, equal memberships with voting privileges—paid annually
    • *We have worked to keep the costs of membership low such that membership is an affordable option to all who want to join. If these costs are prohibitive to you in any way, please feel free to contact us to discuss a solution.

    When?

    • Now!

oCUBE May (Un)Conference: Survey due April 30

    Hi oCUBErs,

April is upon us and behind the scenes we’re busy planning the May UnConference, which is happening May 26-27. New this year, we’re kicking off the UnConference with a pre-UnConference 2-3 hour workshop on May 25!

We need your ideasPlease complete the Unconference Planning Survey by April 30.
    In the survey, you can:

    • Pitch your suggestions/ideas/topics for UnConference sessions
    • Suggest an “invited participant”—someone who isn’t part of our community, but who you think could contribute to the UnConference through their participation, or potentially facilitating a session.
    • Provide suggestions/ideas for a pre-UnConference workshop—we know we have a lot of expertise within our oCUBE community!

JEDI awards: Promoting equity in science

    Hi,

I want to let oCUBERs know about the Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) awards being offered every month from the Life Science Editors Foundation (LSEF).

The purpose of the awards is to promote equity in science by providing opportunities for developing scientists who may have traditionally faced barriers to receive expert editorial advice. Life Science Editors (https://www.lifescienceeditors.com/) was founded by Angela Anderson (alumnus of U of T and former editor at Cell) and Helen Pickersgill (former editor at several journals). Since its inception, the company has helped many scientists with acceptance of grant submissions and manuscripts to high-impact journals. Now they have launched a non-profit foundation to provide broader access their expertise.

I am participating in the project along with a cohort of science/copy editors and I hope to encourage oCUBE members and their colleagues who are eligible to apply for a JEDI award. Please find further information about LSEF and the JEDI awards at http://lifescienceeditors.org/

    Thanks,

    Usha

    • We want to hear from you! Do you have suggestions for potential  "invited participants"? This participant would be someone who isn't part of our community already but who you think would make a contribution by their presence (and might even give a talk to the UnConference).
    • We're proposing the hold a workshop to kick off the UnConference! We often find ourselves without enough time to thoroughly discuss a particular topic, and a workshop would give us a chance to focus on one topic for 2-3 hours. Please let us know what topics would interest you for such a workshop and whether you'd be interested in (co)organizing it.
